HISTORY OF KSIKJ

The first Khoja Shia Ithna Asheri Kuwwatul Islam Jamat of Zanzibar in Tanzania was established in 1881 and the mosque formally opened in 1882 in Kiponda, Zanzibar.
Shia Islam is the second largest branch of Islam. The Shia community consists of about 154 million to 200 million worshippers worldwide today. The Shia Muslims are broken down to other subgroups such as the Khoja Shias.
With Dhows, khoja Shia Muslims had swept their religion and community from India to Zanzibar from the 1800’s. The khojas migrated to East Africa for a better survival due to severe droughts and famines in India. It was believed that the khojas originated from the Indian trading caste (the Loahanas caste), which was quite high in the Indian system. On the other hand, some think that they originated from Gujarati agricultural class.
